New MoonMoon in ScorpioSun in Scorpio

Each practice follows the calendar date. Your own day is marked.

Monday takes its English name from the Moon, the Old English Mōnandæg, the Latin dies Lunae. And on her own day, the moon begins again. She met the Sun at 1:02 a.m. Central, in the deep water of Scorpio, and now a new lunar month is open like a clean page. You cannot see her yet. In a few evenings, a thin gold curve will return to the western sky. Today is for beginning again, gently, without needing to know the whole story.

Today's Cards

Two cards drawn separately, read separately

Tarot · Cups · Ace

Ace of Cupsthe cup that fills again

Receive the readingFold it closed

Your heart has room for something new.

On the card, a hand reaches out of a cloud, holding a single cup. Water spills over its rim in five streams, falling into a still pool where water lilies float. A dove comes down from above toward the cup.

Every ace is a beginning, and the Ace of Cups is a beginning of the heart: a new tenderness, a new friendship, a new kindness toward yourself. On the Moon's own day, with the new moon in a water sign, it reminds you that feeling is not a well that runs dry. Even after a hard season, the cup can fill again. You only have to hold it out.

The card asks

What would you like your heart to be filled with this month?

The Tidethe moon's quiet pull

Some things return on their own time.

In most places along the sea, twice a day, the water draws back and comes in again. The moon is a large part of why. Around the new moon and the full moon, when the Sun and moon pull along the same line, the tides reach a little farther in both directions.

This card comes when you are afraid that something good has left for good: your energy, your hope, your sense of who you are. The tide says, wait. Going out is not the same as being gone. Rest on the shore for a while. Watch for the first wave that comes back toward you.

The card asks

What in your life is slowly coming back to you?

Today's Affirmation

I can begin again, as gently and as often as the moon.

Why this, today

The moon begins again about every twenty-nine and a half days. She never apologizes for it, and she never begins full. She starts as nothing at all, then a thread, then a curve, growing a little each night.

On Monday, the Moon's own day, and in the first hours of a new lunar month, this is a kind thing to remember. You do not have to wait for January or a birthday to start over. You can begin today, small and quiet, and begin again tomorrow if you need to.

Gratitude

For every morning that let you try again.

Why this gratitude

A clean cup on the drying rack. The first page of a notebook. A friend who said, let's try that again. A night's sleep that made yesterday feel smaller.

Think of one time you were given a second chance, by someone else or by yourself, and give thanks for it.

Healing Practice

A low, soft hum three minutes of steady sound

Sit comfortably, with your feet resting on the floor or your legs relaxed in front of you. Close your eyes or let your gaze go soft. Breathe in through your nose, and as you breathe out, hum gently with your lips closed, any low note that feels easy. Let the hum last as long as the breath, then pause and breathe in again. Notice the small buzz of sound in your chest and face. Continue for about three minutes, then sit quietly for a few breaths before you open your eyes.

The teaching beneath

Humming slows the out-breath without any counting, and many people find the steady sound settling, like the low murmur of water. It is a practice of rest, not a treatment. Think of it as your own small tide: in, and out, and in again.

If humming is uncomfortable for your throat, or you need to keep quiet around others, hum silently in your mind, or simply listen to the sound of your own breath. Any position that is comfortable for you is the right one, including lying down.

The new moon arrived at 1:02 a.m. Central, when the moon met the Sun at about 17° Scorpio. All day she travels just beside the Sun, rising at about 7:42 a.m. and setting at about 4:36 p.m., too close to its glare to be seen. She stays in Scorpio through the day and night, then moves into Sagittarius at 2:36 a.m. Central, early Tuesday. The first quarter moon comes on Tuesday, November 17, and the full moon, in Gemini, on Tuesday, November 24.

Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio and Venus is retrograde in Libra. Both turn direct this Friday, November 13: Mercury in the morning and Venus in the evening. Saturn is retrograde in Aries until December 10, and Neptune, also in Aries, until December 12. Uranus is retrograde in Gemini. Mars and Jupiter travel together through Leo and come closest this Sunday, November 15, a little more than one degree apart.

Look up before dawn, and later this week

Between about 5:45 and 6:30 a.m., look high in the south-southeast for bright Jupiter, more than halfway up the sky. Fainter, reddish Mars sits just above it and a little to the right, now a little less than two finger-widths away at arm's length. Low in the east-southeast, brilliant Venus rises at about 5:04 a.m. and climbs to about 13 degrees above the horizon by 6:30. Sunrise is at 7:02 a.m. In the evening, golden Saturn shines in the southeast, about a third of the way up the sky by 7 p.m. The young moon returns soon: on Thursday, November 12, between about 5:15 and 5:45 p.m., look low in the southwest, about a fist's width above the horizon at arm's length, for a slim crescent in the twilight.

Aries

the road past the doorway

The new moon's first day stays in your sector of deep change and shared things, then moves into your sector of far horizons at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

Last night's new moon began in the most private room of your chart, where trust and shared things live. Today it is still very new, too thin to see. Let it stay that way for now. Something between you and another person may be shifting quietly, an old worry finally set down or a kindness returned. You do not have to name it yet. Simply notice where you feel lighter.

Before dawn on Tuesday, the moon crosses into your sector of travel, study and big questions, and your curiosity will stir. Your ruler Mars is high in the south before sunrise, edging closer to Jupiter each morning. Saturn and Neptune, moving backward through your sign, ask you to begin slowly. A road is easier to walk when you have rested at the doorway first.

A small act for today

Look at a map, a book or a website about a place you hope to visit someday, and let yourself daydream for ten minutes.

Ask yourself

Which part of the world, or of myself, am I curious to explore next?

Apr 20 to May 20

Taurus

promises made slowly

The new moon's first day stays in your partnership sector, then moves into your sector of shared resources at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

The moon begins her new month opposite your sign, in the part of your chart that holds partners and close companions. Monday is the moon's own day, and today she asks you to listen more than you speak. You are loyal, Taurus, and loyalty is strongest when it is renewed by choice. Notice the person who steadies you, and let them know it, in your own plain way.

Your ruler Venus is still retrograde in your sector of daily work and routines, and she turns direct this Friday evening, the 13th. Hold off on big promises about shared money or time until then. From early Tuesday, the moon moves into your sector of shared resources. A slow promise, carefully kept, is worth more than a quick one.

A small act for today

Make a warm drink and share it with someone, or with yourself, for ten minutes without a screen.

Ask yourself

Which promise in my life deserves to be renewed with care?

May 21 to Jun 20

Gemini

listen for the quiet voice

The new moon's first day stays in your sector of daily life and wellbeing, then moves into your partnership sector at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

The new moon is only hours old, resting in your sector of work, routines and everyday care. Your mind has many voices, Gemini, and today one of them is very quiet. It is the voice that knows when you are tired. Listen for it. Monday is a good day to let your list be shorter than usual, and to do the few things on it with your full attention.

Your ruler Mercury is retrograde close to the Sun and turns direct on Friday morning, the 13th. Uranus is moving backward through your own sign, so changes to your habits may come in small, sideways steps this week. From early Tuesday, the moon moves into your partnership sector, and talks with others will feel warmer. Today, the most important conversation is with yourself.

A small act for today

Cross off one item on today's list that does not truly need doing this week.

Ask yourself

What is my tired self trying to tell me?

Jun 21 to Jul 22

Cancer

your ruler's own day

The new moon, your ruler, stays all day in your sector of joy and creativity, then moves into your sector of daily care at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

Monday is named for the moon, and the moon is your ruler, so this is your day in a quiet way. She began her new month in the small hours, in your sector of play, romance and creative delight. You may feel shy about wanting things today. That is all right. A new moon is not loud. It is the first faint wish to try something simply because it might bring you joy.

Jupiter and Mars shine high before dawn in your sector of worth and resources, reminding you that your gifts are real. From early Tuesday, the moon moves into your sector of routines and daily care, so tomorrow is a good time to make room in your week for the thing you love. Tonight, simply let yourself want it.

A small act for today

Write down one joyful thing you would like to try this month, and choose a day for it.

Ask yourself

Where in my week could a little more delight fit?

Jul 23 to Aug 22

Leo

warm the hearth, then play

The new moon's first day stays at the root of your chart, your home sector, then moves into your sector of joy at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

Your ruler the Sun sits with the young new moon at the root of your chart, in your sector of home, family and the private self. This new month begins in the most inward place you have. Today, take care of the ground under your feet. Wash the cup you keep reaching for, change the sheets, or call someone who knows your oldest stories. Home can be people as well as rooms.

Mars and Jupiter travel together through your own sign, high in the south before dawn and drawing closer each morning until their closest meeting on Sunday. You have a great deal of warmth to give this month, Leo. From early Tuesday, the moon moves into your sector of play and creativity, and shining will come easily. Warm the hearth first. Then play.

A small act for today

Do one small, caring task at home that will make tomorrow morning easier.

Ask yourself

Who helped make me who I am, and have I told them?

Aug 23 to Sep 22

Virgo

a softer word for home

The new moon's first day stays in your sector of words, learning and short journeys, then moves into your home sector at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

The new moon is quietly at work in your sector of conversation, study and the short paths of your week. Your ruler Mercury is here too, retrograde and close to the Sun, until Friday morning, the 13th. This is a time to reread rather than rewrite. An old letter, an old notebook or a conversation you keep replaying may hold something you missed the first time.

Venus, retrograde in your sector of worth, asks what you truly value, and Mars and Jupiter shine in your most hidden sector, where rest and dreams live. From early Tuesday, the moon moves to the root of your chart, your sector of home and family. You are so good at caring for details, Virgo. This week, let home be a place where nothing needs correcting.

A small act for today

Reread one page you wrote long ago, a letter, a list or a journal entry, and notice who you were then.

Ask yourself

What have I learned since I last wrote about this?

Sep 23 to Oct 22

Libra

say what you value

The new moon's first day stays in your sector of worth and values, then moves into your sector of words and messages at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

The young moon rests in your sector of money, worth and the things you hold dear. A new moon here invites a fresh start in how you spend your energy, not only your money. Notice today where your time goes without your choosing. One small boundary, kindly held, can give you back an hour, and an hour is a precious thing to have.

Your ruler Venus is still retrograde in your own sign, rising brilliant before dawn in the east-southeast. She turns direct this Friday evening, the 13th, and you may feel clearer about yourself then. Saturn and Neptune are retrograde in your partnership sector, asking for patience with others. From early Tuesday, the moon moves into your sector of words. Let what you value be something you can say aloud, simply.

A small act for today

Write one sentence that begins "I value," and finish it honestly.

Ask yourself

Where does my time go when I am not choosing it?

Oct 23 to Nov 21

Scorpio

the first morning of your moon

The new moon's first day stays in your own sign, then moves into your sector of worth and resources at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

Your new moon arrived at 1:02 a.m. Central, at about 17° of your sign, and today is its very first day. The Sun, the moon and retrograde Mercury are all gathered in you. If you woke feeling raw or tender, be gentle with yourself. Beginnings can feel like that. You do not have to know what this new year of yours will hold. You only have to begin it kindly.

Mars, your traditional ruler, shines high before dawn in your sector of work and calling, beside Jupiter, so your ambitions are glowing even while your heart is quiet. Pluto, your modern ruler, moves slowly through your home sector. Mercury turns direct on Friday the 13th. From early Tuesday, the moon moves into your sector of worth, and you can begin to give your new hopes a shape.

A small act for today

Open a window or step outside for one minute of fresh air, and quietly say good morning to your new cycle.

Ask yourself

How do I want to treat myself as this new cycle begins?

Nov 22 to Dec 21

Sagittarius

the moon comes home to you

The new moon's first day stays in your hidden sector of rest and dreams, then moves into your own sign at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

Today the new moon rests in the quietest corner of your chart, the sector of sleep, solitude and private prayer. Tomorrow, before dawn, she moves into your own sign. That makes today a threshold, a held breath. Use it to finish one small thing you have left undone, so you can walk into the new month with lighter pockets.

Your ruler Jupiter shines high in the south before sunrise, side by side with Mars in your sector of travel and faith. The two will be closest on Sunday. Mercury, retrograde in this same quiet sector, may bring old memories to the surface. Let them come and go. The Sun reaches your sign on November 22, and your season is nearly here. Rest today, and arrive tomorrow.

A small act for today

Finish one small, unfinished task before bed, such as a reply, a mended button or a returned book.

Ask yourself

What do I want to leave behind before my season begins?

Dec 22 to Jan 19

Capricorn

quiet hours before the climb

The new moon's first day stays in your sector of friendship and hopes, then moves into your hidden sector of rest at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

The new moon is young in your sector of friends, groups and the future you are hoping for. Monday is a working day for many people, and you may be tempted to push straight through it. Try a different pace. Let one hope for the future sit in the back of your mind while you work, like a song you are humming quietly to yourself.

Your ruler Saturn is retrograde in your home sector until December 10, asking you to repair before you build. Venus, retrograde at the top of your chart, turns direct on Friday evening, and questions about your work may settle then. From early Tuesday, the moon moves into your sector of rest and solitude. Plan one quiet hour this week. The climb is easier after a pause.

A small act for today

Put one quiet hour for yourself in your calendar this week, and guard it gently.

Ask yourself

Which hope for the coming year is truly mine, and not someone else's?

Jan 20 to Feb 18

Aquarius

your work, among friends

The new moon's first day stays at the top of your chart, your sector of work and calling, then moves into your sector of friendship at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

The young moon sits at the top of your chart with the Sun and retrograde Mercury, in your sector of work, reputation and calling. This is a good week to look back at what you have already done and give it credit. Retrograde Mercury is good at looking back. Notice one thing you did this year that you are quietly proud of, and let yourself feel it.

Saturn, your traditional ruler, moves backward through your sector of words and neighbors, and Uranus, your modern ruler, is retrograde in your sector of joy. Mars and Jupiter shine in your partnership sector. From early Tuesday, the moon moves into your sector of friends and community. Your work does not have to be lonely, Aquarius. Let someone see what you are building.

A small act for today

Tell a friend or colleague about one piece of your work you are proud of.

Ask yourself

Who would I like to build something alongside?

Feb 19 to Mar 20

Pisces

a dream with a timetable

The new moon's first day stays in your sector of learning, faith and far horizons, then moves to the top of your chart, your sector of work and calling, at 2:36 a.m. Central early Tuesday.

The new moon is swimming through a fellow water sign, in your sector of study, travel and the search for meaning. You dream easily, Pisces. Today, give one dream a small timetable: a first step and a day to take it. A dream with a date is still a dream. It simply has a door, and you are allowed to walk through it slowly.

Jupiter, your traditional ruler, shines high before dawn in your sector of daily routines, so practical steps may come more easily than you expect. Neptune, your modern ruler, is retrograde in your sector of worth until December 12. From early Tuesday, the moon reaches the top of your chart, your sector of work and calling. What you learn now may become what you offer later.

A small act for today

Choose one dream and write down its first small step, with the date you will take it.

Ask yourself

What would my dream need from me this week?

Today's Quote

The moon was but a chin of gold
A night or two ago,
And now she turns her perfect face
Upon the world below.

Emily Dickinson · The Moon, from Poems: Third Series (1896)

About this line

Emily Dickinson lived most of her life in Amherst, Massachusetts, and almost all of her poems were published after her death in 1886. This one appeared in Poems: Third Series in 1896, edited by Mabel Loomis Todd, under the title "The Moon." A "chin of gold" is her picture of the thin crescent, the moon's first sliver after the new moon.

Today the moon is too new to see at all. In a few nights she will be that chin of gold again, low in the evening sky, and two weeks from now she will turn her full face toward us. The poem is a small promise: what begins as almost nothing can grow whole.

For Your Journal

If this month were a clean page, what would I write first?

Three doorways if the question feels closed
  1. Cup door: what feeling would I like more room for in the weeks ahead?
  2. Tide door: what has drifted away from me that I would welcome back?
  3. Crescent door: what is the smallest possible first step, the sliver before the whole?

A Sacred Practice for Today

The first page a moon calendar for the Moon's own day

The new moon has just begun, and Monday is her day. This ritual makes a simple calendar for the lunar month ahead, from tonight's new moon to the next one on December 8. Each evening you will add a few words, so that by the end of the month you hold a small record of how your life and the moon grew together. Begin any time today, and keep it near your bed.

You'll need

  • A sheet of paper or a fresh notebook page, and a pen
  • A glass of water
  • A soft lamp, or a candle in a steady holder (a battery tea light works beautifully)
  • Optional: colored pencils
  1. I

Switch on your lamp or light your candle, and set the glass of water beside your page. Sit comfortably and take a slow sip.

The moon has long been linked with water and the tides. A sip is a quiet way of saying, I am here, and I am beginning.

  2. II

Down the side of the page, write the dates from November 9 to December 8, one to a line.

Thirty lines hold one lunar month, about twenty-nine and a half days from new moon to new moon.

  3. III

Draw a small moon shape beside four dates: a dark circle for today, a half circle for November 17, a full circle for November 24, and the other half for December 1.

Marking the phases helps you feel the month's shape: a beginning, a rising, a fullness and a letting go.

  4. IV

At the top of the page, write one word you would like this month to hold, such as rest, courage or tenderness. Say the charm below softly.

One word is easy to carry. It becomes a lantern you can glance at on a busy day.

  5. V

Beside today's date, write one thing you noticed today, however small. Then each evening, add one line: a kindness, a feeling, a moment of light.

Small notes, kept night after night, become a gentle story of your month, the way the crescent becomes the full moon.

Say softly over your first page:

Moon of the morning, hidden and new,
here is a page I begin with you.
Night after night I will write what I see,
and grow as you grow, gently, with me.

If you use a real candle, keep it in a steady holder on a heat-safe surface, away from curtains, paper, little ones and pets, and never leave it burning unattended; a battery tea light is a lovely, worry-free choice. If writing feels hard, you can draw a tiny picture, or speak your line aloud instead. Some evenings will be empty, and that is all right; simply begin again the next night. If this quiet time brings up loneliness or grief, reach out to someone you trust or a professional who can help.

Closing blessing

May you begin again as softly as the moon,
without hurry and without shame.
May each small day hold a little light,
and may you find it, one night at a time.Wander wisely, wild one · Kelli
