Waning CrescentMoon in ScorpioSun in Scorpio

Each practice follows the calendar date. Your own day is marked.

Sunday takes its English name from the Sun, the Old English Sunnandæg, the Latin dies Solis. Yet today the moon is all but dark. She travels through Scorpio beside the Sun, less than one percent lit, and the new moon arrives at 1:02 a.m. Central tonight. Here is the quiet secret of a dark moon: her far side is turned fully toward the Sun, bathed in light we cannot see. Today is for trusting what grows where no one is looking.

The High Priestessthe knowing behind the veil

Receive the readingFold it closed

You know more than you can say yet.

On the card, a woman sits still between a dark pillar and a light one. A veil hangs behind her, sewn with pomegranates, and a crescent moon rests at her feet. In her lap she holds a scroll, half hidden in the folds of her robe.

The High Priestess does not rush to explain. She is the card of the inner voice, the quiet knowing that comes before words. On the darkest night of the moon, she asks you to stop searching outside yourself for a little while, and listen to what you already sense.

The card asks

What do you already know, deep down, that you have not said aloud?

The Seedalready becoming

Receive the readingFold it closed

Small things begin in the dark.

A seed does not need to see the sky to start growing. Under the soil, in the cold and the quiet, it softens, swells and sends down its first thread of root. Nothing shows above the ground for a long time.

This card comes when you are waiting for proof that something is working. It reminds you that beginnings are usually invisible. A hope you tend gently, a habit you return to, a kindness you keep offering: these are seeds too. Let them be small. Let them be hidden. They are still alive.

The card asks

What are you tending that has not shown itself yet?

Today's Affirmation

Even in the dark, part of me is turned toward the light.

Why this, today

At the new moon, the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. The side we see goes dark, but the side we cannot see is in full sunlight. The darkness is only a matter of where we are standing.

On the Sun's own day, with the moon at her thinnest, this is a gentle truth to carry. A dark season in your life does not mean the light has gone. It may simply be shining on a part of you that is still growing.

Gratitude

For the things that grow where no one can see.

Why this gratitude

Bread rising under a tea towel. Bulbs waiting under the frozen garden. A friendship that deepened slowly, over years of ordinary afternoons. The patience you did not know you were learning.

Think of one good thing in your life that grew quietly, without anyone watching, and give thanks for it.

Healing Practice

Warm hands, soft dark three minutes of resting the eyes

Sit comfortably and rub your palms together gently until they feel warm. Close your eyes and cup your palms over them, fingers resting on your forehead, with no pressure on the eyes themselves. Let the small darkness under your hands be soft and complete. Breathe slowly, and let your shoulders drop. Stay for about three minutes, then lower your hands and open your eyes slowly to the light.

The teaching beneath

Resting the eyes under cupped hands is a simple way of giving them a pause from screens and bright rooms. It is a practice of rest, not a treatment. Like the dark moon, it is a small, chosen darkness that makes the light feel kinder afterward.

If raising your arms is tiring, rest your elbows on a table or a cushion, or simply close your eyes without your hands. If you wear contact lenses or your eyes feel uncomfortable, keep your hands lightly away from them.

The moon spends the whole day in Scorpio, the deep water sign, traveling close beside the Sun. She rises at about 6:33 a.m. and sets at about 4:07 p.m., hidden in the Sun's glare, so you will not see her today. Tonight at 1:02 a.m. Central, early Monday, she meets the Sun at about 17° Scorpio for the new moon. This is the dark of the moon, the threshold between one lunar month and the next.

Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio and Venus is retrograde in Libra. Both turn direct this Friday, November 13: Mercury in the morning and Venus that evening. Saturn and Neptune are retrograde in Aries, and Uranus is retrograde in Gemini. Mars and Jupiter travel together through Leo, drawing closer each night. The next full moon, in Gemini, arrives on Tuesday, November 24.

Look up before dawn

The moon is hidden, but the planets are not. Between about 5:45 and 6:30 a.m., look high in the south for bright Jupiter, a steady cream-colored light more than halfway up the sky. Just above it and slightly to the right is fainter, reddish Mars, about two finger-widths away when you hold your hand out at arm's length. They will draw even closer through next week. Low in the east-southeast, brilliant Venus rises around 5:10 a.m. and climbs to about 12 degrees above the horizon by 6:30. Sunrise is at 7:00 a.m. In the early evening, golden Saturn shines in the southeast, about a third of the way up the sky at 7 p.m.

Aries

let the fire bank low

The dark moon stays all day in your sector of deep change and shared things.

Tonight's new moon falls in the most private part of your chart, the place of trust, intimacy and everything you share with others. It is a quiet doorway. What begins here begins slowly, under the surface, often in a conversation you have been putting off or a feeling you have kept to yourself. Sit with that feeling today instead of rushing past it. Courage can be very quiet.

Saturn and Neptune are both moving backward through your sign, asking you to revisit old promises before making new ones. Your ruler Mars is bright in the predawn sky beside Jupiter, full of warmth. Let that fire bank low today, like coals kept for morning. You do not have to start anything tonight. You only have to be honest about what you want.

A small act for today

Write down one thing you would like to trust someone with, even if you keep the page to yourself.

Ask yourself

What am I ready to let someone see?

Apr 20 to May 20

Taurus

a new page between you

The dark moon stays all day in your partnership sector, opposite your sign.

The new moon arrives tonight in your sector of close relationships: partners, dear friends, and anyone you meet one to one. A new moon here is a chance to begin again with someone, gently. It may be a fresh agreement, an apology, or simply a decision to listen more slowly. Choose one person, and one small way to meet them more honestly and tenderly this month.

Your ruler Venus is retrograde in your sector of daily routines and turns direct this Friday evening, the 13th. Until then, think before you rearrange your days around anyone else. Notice which of your habits truly serve you and which you keep only to please. A relationship can be renewed without you giving yourself away.

A small act for today

Tell someone close to you one thing you appreciate about how they show up for you.

Ask yourself

What would a fresh start look like in my closest relationship?

May 21 to Jun 20

Gemini

one small habit, planted

The dark moon stays all day in your sector of daily life and wellbeing.

Tonight's new moon falls in the part of your chart that holds your routines, your work and the ordinary care you give yourself. It is a lovely moment to plant one small habit, the kind so simple you could keep it on a tired day: a glass of water by the bed, five quiet minutes in the morning, a walk or a seated stretch after lunch. Your restless mind may resist something so plain. Let it. Simple things are often the ones that last.

Mercury, your ruler, is retrograde in this same sector until Friday morning, the 13th. You may find yourself returning to an old routine you once loved. That is welcome. Uranus is also moving backward through your sign, so let change come slowly this week. One small seed is enough.

A small act for today

Choose one tiny daily habit for the coming month and write it on a sticky note where you will see it.

Ask yourself

Which small routine has quietly carried me before?

Jun 21 to Jul 22

Cancer

your ruler sleeps tonight

The dark moon, your ruler, stays all day in your sector of joy and creativity.

The moon is your ruler, and tonight she goes fully dark, meeting the Sun in your sector of play, creativity and the things you love for their own sake. You may feel quieter than usual today. That is not a loss of joy. It is the hush before something new begins. Give yourself permission to be slow, soft and a little hidden until the first crescent returns.

This new moon is a soft invitation to start a creative thing for no one but yourself: a sketch, a song hummed in the kitchen, a recipe you want to try. Keep it small and private for now. Jupiter in your sector of worth reminds you that what delights you has value, even if it never earns a thing.

A small act for today

Spend fifteen minutes making something with your hands, just for the pleasure of it.

Ask yourself

What did I love to make before I worried whether it was good?

Jul 23 to Aug 22

Leo

the Sun's own day

The dark moon stays all day at the root of your chart, your home sector.

Sunday belongs to the Sun, and the Sun is your ruler. Today it sits at the root of your chart beside the dark moon, in your sector of home, family and the private self. Tonight's new moon is a beginning that starts at home: a room made new, a family pattern gently changed, a quieter way of caring for yourself. Sunday has long been a day for gathering at home, and that old rhythm suits you today.

Mars and Jupiter are traveling together through your sign, drawing closer every night this week. You can see them before dawn, high in the south. Their brightness is yours, Leo. Today, turn it inward. Let your warmth fill your own rooms first, and let the people at home feel it.

A small act for today

Choose one spot in your home and make it brighter: open a curtain, clear a shelf, or set a lamp there.

Ask yourself

What do I want my home to feel like by the next full moon?

Aug 23 to Sep 22

Virgo

the unsent draft can wait

The dark moon stays all day in your sector of words, learning and short journeys.

Tonight's new moon falls in your sector of conversation, writing, neighbors and the everyday paths you walk. It is a fine time to begin a new kind of learning or a new way of speaking to yourself. Start with the words you use inside your own head. Are they kind? Speak to yourself the way you would speak to a friend who is learning.

Your ruler Mercury is retrograde in this very sector until Friday morning, the 13th. Messages may cross, and plans may need a second look. Let the unsent draft wait until Friday. Read it once more after the weekend. Your care with words is a gift, and it does not have to be perfect to be true.

A small act for today

Write a kinder version of one sentence you often say to yourself, and read it aloud once.

Ask yourself

What would I say differently if I trusted my words to be enough?

Sep 23 to Oct 22

Libra

what you are worth, quietly

The dark moon stays all day in your sector of worth, money and values.

The new moon arrives tonight in your sector of resources, self-worth and the things you treasure. It is a gentle moment to begin a new relationship with what you have: a simple budget, a promise to rest more, a decision to stop discounting your own time. Small, steady choices made now can carry you a long way by the full moon, when the light returns to the sky.

Venus, your ruler, is still retrograde in your own sign and turns direct this Friday evening, the 13th. She rises before dawn now, brilliant in the east-southeast. These last days of her backward journey ask you to look honestly at how you value yourself. Your worth was never something to earn. It is something to remember.

A small act for today

List three things you own or know that you would not trade for anything.

Ask yourself

Where have I been selling my time or care too cheaply?

Oct 23 to Nov 21

Scorpio

your new moon at midnight

The dark moon stays all day in your own sign, meeting the Sun at 1:02 a.m. Central tonight.

This is your new moon, Scorpio, the one that comes only once a year. The Sun, the moon and retrograde Mercury are all gathered in your sign, and tonight, just after midnight, the moon begins again in you. Whatever you plant now may take root through the whole year ahead. Let today be slow and inward, the long, slow breath before a beginning.

You do not need a grand plan. Choose one thing you want to grow in yourself, something honest and close to the bone. Keep it private if you like. You understand better than most that the deepest changes start out of sight. Mercury turns direct on Friday the 13th, and your words will come more easily then.

A small act for today

Before bed, sit in the dark for one minute and silently name what you want to begin.

Ask yourself

Who am I becoming this year, if I let myself?

Nov 22 to Dec 21

Sagittarius

dreams before the journey

The dark moon stays all day in your most hidden sector of rest and dreams.

Tonight's new moon falls in the quietest corner of your chart, the place of sleep, solitude and what you keep to yourself. It is the last new moon before your birthday season, and it asks for something unusual for you: stillness. A good dream is often the first map of a new road. Sleep in if you can, or close your eyes for a while this afternoon, and let the world go on without you.

Your ruler Jupiter travels with Mars through Leo, your sector of faith and far horizons, shining high before dawn. The wider world is calling you, and it will still be calling when the Sun reaches your sign on November 22. Today, rest. Let your next adventure take shape in the dark first.

A small act for today

Keep a pen and paper by your bed tonight, and jot down any dream or thought you wake with.

Ask yourself

What do I hope my next chapter feels like?

Dec 22 to Jan 19

Capricorn

a hope shared softly

The dark moon stays all day in your sector of friendship and future hopes.

The new moon arrives tonight in your sector of friends, community and the hopes you hold for the years ahead. It is a good time to begin something with others, or to let one trusted friend in on a dream you usually keep close. A small plan made together, a walk with a friend or a shared meal could be the start of something good. Let yourself be helped.

Your ruler Saturn is retrograde in your home sector until December 10, asking you to tend your foundations before you build higher. You carry so much on your own, Capricorn. This new moon reminds you that some hopes grow best when they are shared. You do not have to climb every mountain alone.

A small act for today

Send one friend a short note about something you are hoping for this winter.

Ask yourself

Which hope would feel lighter if someone else knew about it?

Jan 20 to Feb 18

Aquarius

a calling in seed form

The dark moon stays all day at the top of your chart, your sector of work and calling.

Tonight's new moon falls at the very top of your chart, in your sector of work, reputation and the path you are walking in the world. A new moon here is a seed of purpose. It may not look like a career plan. It may only be a feeling that you are meant to do something more, or something different. Notice what you find yourself drawn to, again and again, when no one is asking anything of you.

Pluto is moving slowly through your sign, and Uranus is retrograde in your sector of joy and creativity. Both suggest that your calling may grow from what delights you. Do not force the answer this week. Let the seed of an idea rest in the dark, and water it with curiosity.

A small act for today

Write one sentence about the work you would do if no one were judging it.

Ask yourself

What kind of work makes me lose track of time?

Feb 19 to Mar 20

Pisces

a far shore calling

The dark moon stays all day in your sector of learning, faith and wide horizons.

The new moon arrives tonight in a fellow water sign, in your sector of travel, study, faith and the search for meaning. It is a lovely time to begin learning something that feeds your soul: a language, a poem a week, a tradition you are curious about, approached with respect. Let the moon's quiet tonight make room for wonder, and for the questions that have no quick answers.

Neptune, your modern ruler, is retrograde in your sector of worth, quietly asking what you truly value. Jupiter, your traditional ruler, shines high before dawn in your sector of daily life. Let your big dreams and your ordinary days hold hands. A far shore is reached one small, steady stroke at a time.

A small act for today

Choose one book, class or subject you would love to explore this winter, and write its name down.

Ask yourself

What question about life have I been longing to explore?

Today's Quote

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.

Julian of Norwich · Revelations of Divine Love, translated by Grace Warrack (1901)

About this line

Julian of Norwich was an English anchoress who lived in a small cell beside a church in Norwich in the late 1300s and early 1400s. Her Revelations of Divine Love is often called the earliest surviving book in English known to be written by a woman. This wording comes from Grace Warrack's English version, first published in 1901.

Julian wrote from her own Christian faith, and her words have since comforted people of many faiths and none. On the darkest night of the moon, they are a quiet reminder that the dark is not the end of the story.

For Your Journal

What is quietly growing in me that I have not yet named?

Three doorways if the question feels closed
  1. Seed door: what small hope have I been carrying without telling anyone?
  2. Dark door: what has a hard season taught me that an easy one could not?
  3. Light door: where in my life, right now, do I feel the faint warmth of something beginning?

A Sacred Practice for Today

The sealed wish a seed ritual for the dark moon

Tonight, a little after midnight, the moon begins again. Many seeds begin their growing underground, in the dark, and this ritual borrows that simple wisdom. You will write one wish, seal it away, and leave it to grow unseen until the full moon on November 24. Do it any time this evening, before bed.

You'll need

  • A small slip of paper and a pen
  • An envelope, or a sheet of paper you can fold closed
  • A drawer, a box, or a book where it can rest
  • A soft lamp, or a candle in a steady holder (a battery tea light works beautifully)
  1. I

Dim the room and switch on your lamp or light your candle. Sit comfortably and take three slow breaths.

The dark moon asks for a softer light, just enough to see by.

  2. II

Think of one thing you would like to grow in your life this coming month. Keep it small, real and kind to you.

A seed is small on purpose. It carries everything it needs.

  3. III

Write it on the slip of paper as one sentence, as if it has already begun: "I am learning to rest," or "I am making room for joy."

Words in the present tense remind you the growing has already started.

  4. IV

Fold the slip, seal it in the envelope, and write "Open at the full moon, November 24" on the outside. Say the charm below softly over it.

Sealing it is a way of letting go. You do not have to keep checking on a seed.

  5. V

Tuck the envelope somewhere dark: a drawer, a box, or between the pages of a book you love. Then turn off your light and rest.

On the full moon, open it and see what has quietly grown.

Say softly over your sealed wish:

Small seed, dark ground,
no light, no sound.
I plant my wish and let it be,
and trust the turning moon with me.

If you use a real candle, keep it in a steady holder on a heat-safe surface, away from curtains, paper, little ones and pets, and never leave it burning unattended; a battery tea light is a lovely, worry-free choice. A wish is an intention, not a promise, so be gentle with yourself whatever the month brings. If this quiet time stirs up grief or loneliness, reach out to someone you trust or a professional who can help.

Closing blessing

May you rest easy in the dark,
knowing the light has not left you.
May your small seeds root deeply,
and rise when they are ready.Wander wisely, wild one · Kelli
