The Lovers

MAJOR ARCANA  ·  VI · THE LOVERS
Sacred First-Choosing · Sacred Jupiter-Day · Sacred Waning-Gibbous-Moon · Sacred Moon-in-Gemini · Sacred Mercury-Retrograde · Sacred Moon-Sextile-Jupiter · Sacred Nineteenth-Morning · Day 19 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-choosing-beloved of tender first-choosing

A sacred first-choosing day for the garden of the heart,
as the Lovers’ choosing-beloved stands barefoot beneath the angel on Jupiter’s own Thursday, the waning Moon traveling through Gemini, the Lovers’ own sign.

The Energy of The Lovers

The Lovers carries the energy of the sacred first-choosing-beloved — the one who stands at the crossroads of the heart and chooses freely. She is the sixth card of the Major Arcana. After the Hierophant teaches the wisdom of tradition, the Lovers asks a more personal question: what do you value, and whom, and what, will you choose?

The Lovers does not, faithfully, mean only romance. At her heart she is the card of alignment — the moment when what we love and what we do become one. She is choosing a partner, yes, but also choosing a path, a calling, a set of values, a way of living that matches the truth inside us.

The Lovers is the tarot card of Gemini, and today the waning Moon travels through the middle of Gemini on Jupiter’s own Thursday. The twins of Gemini and the pair in the garden share one lesson: two become whole when they choose each other freely.

Symbolism of the Card

A woman stands barefoot in a sunlit garden beside her beloved. Behind her grows a tree heavy with fruit and blossoms; behind him, a tree of small, bright flames. Above them, in the open sky, a radiant angel spreads wide wings in blessing. Far off, a single mountain rises between them. A sprig of lavender rests in her open hand.

The two trees are the two kinds of love — the fruit of the heart’s wisdom and the flame of passion. The angel is the higher self, blessing choices made with honesty. The mountain is the shared path ahead, and the challenges worth climbing together. Their bare feet show nothing is hidden. She is not waiting to be chosen. She is choosing, in full view of heaven.

Reflection for the Day

The Lovers on Jupiter’s own Thursday asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question: does the life I am choosing match the heart I carry?

Every day we choose — what to say yes to, where to give our time, whom to keep close. Small choices, made again and again, become a life.

Mercury retrograde makes this a season for second chances: for revisiting old choices and, where the heart has changed, choosing again. Jupiter on his own day adds faith and a wider view.

And because the Moon is waning, the reflection carries a gentle direction: choose by letting go of what no longer fits, so there is room for what does.

Thought of the Day

Love, softly chosen, is not a surrender of the self. She is the sovereign feminine in the sunlit garden, barefoot and unhidden, choosing her beloved and her path with the same clear yes.

Affirmation

I stand, softly, as the choosing-beloved stands — honest, barefoot, and unhidden, choosing what I love and loving what I choose.

Questions to Consider
  1. Which of your current choices feel most aligned with your values, and which feel out of step?
  2. In your closest relationships, do you feel freely chosen — and do you freely choose in return?
  3. Is there an old choice that your heart is asking you to make again, differently?
  4. What would it look like to let your love and your daily life become one?
Quote of the Day
“You pierce my soul.
I am half agony, half hope.”
— Jane Austen, Persuasion

Jane Austen — born in Steventon, Hampshire, in 1775, the seventh of eight children of a country clergyman; who began writing comic stories as a girl to amuse her family; who published her novels anonymously, signed only “By a Lady”; and who wrote Persuasion in the last years of her short life — died in 1817, and the novel was published a few months after her death. These words come from the letter Captain Frederick Wentworth writes to Anne Elliot, the woman he loved and lost eight years before.

You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Years earlier, Anne was persuaded to give Wentworth up. Now he writes, quickly and secretly, while she talks with a friend in the same room, telling her his heart has never changed. The letter asks her to choose again — and this time she chooses with her own heart. It is often called the most romantic letter in English literature, and it is, at its core, about a second chance to choose love freely.

Today’s Lovers lives in Austen’s words directly. Wentworth’s letter is a second chance laid bare: half agony, half hope. Anne reads it and chooses him with her whole heart — the choosing-beloved, at last, choosing for herself.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“The Look of Love” — Dusty Springfield (from Casino Royale (Original Soundtrack), 1967)

Dusty Springfield — born Mary O’Brien in West Hampstead, London, in 1939, who sang with her brother in the folk group the Springfields before going solo in 1963 and becoming one of the great voices of British soul — recorded “The Look of Love” for the 1967 film Casino Royale. Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the song earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

Today’s Lovers lives in this song. Slow, soft, and glowing, it describes the moment two people see in each other’s eyes that the choice has already been made. It is the sound of love recognized — the quiet yes of the heart before any words are spoken.

Parting Thought
May the Lovers’ sacred first-choosing-beloved stand beside you in the sunlit garden,
barefoot and unhidden, the angel’s wings wide above her, the mountain waiting ahead.
May the small tender choosing be enough —
one value honored, one love affirmed, one path chosen with an honest heart.
May the twins of Gemini teach you how two can become whole,
and may Jupiter, on his own Thursday, bless the choices you make in love.
You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope.
The body has, faithfully, chosen with an open hand on the sacred nineteenth morning — the Lovers’ blessing on Jupiter’s own Thursday.
