Ten of Pentacles

MINOR ARCANA  ·  X OF PENTACLES
Sacred First-Homecoming · Sacred Venus-Day · Sacred Waning-Gibbous-Moon · Sacred Moon-Crossing-into-Cancer · Sacred Venus-Retrograde · Sacred Water-Trine-to-the-Sun · Sacred Twentieth-Morning · Day 20 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-hearth-grandmother of tender first-homecoming

A sacred first-homecoming day for the long love of the family,
as the Ten of Pentacles’ hearth-grandmother gathers her generations beneath the archway on Venus’s own Friday, the waning Moon coming home to Cancer, the sign of the hearth.

The Energy of the Ten of Pentacles

The Ten of Pentacles carries the energy of the sacred first-hearth-grandmother — the elder at the center of a home that has grown across generations. She belongs to the suit of Pentacles, the suit of earth, body, home, and the work of our hands. The Ten is the completion of that suit: the moment when what was planted long ago has become a whole, living household.

The Ten of Pentacles does not, faithfully, mean only money or inheritance. At her best she is the kitchen where three generations cook together, the recipe written in a grandmother’s hand, the family stories told again each holiday. Her true wealth is belonging — the long thread of love that runs from the elders to the children and back.

Today the waning Moon comes home to Cancer, the sign of mothers, family, and the hearth, on Venus’s own Friday. Few cards could welcome her home more warmly.

Symbolism of the Card

Beneath the stone archway of an old family home, a grandmother sits wrapped in a woven shawl. Two white dogs rest at her feet. Beside her stand her daughter and a small grandchild, the child’s hand reaching for one of the dogs. In the air around them, ten golden pentacles glow in the shape of the Tree of Life. A sprig of lavender is tucked into the grandmother’s shawl.

The archway is the threshold between the wider world and the family hearth. The three generations show that home is not one person but a lineage. The white dogs are loyalty and protection. The ten pentacles in the Tree of Life pattern show that the ordinary life of a family — meals, chores, stories, care — is woven into something sacred. She is not the owner of this home. She is its root.

Reflection for the Day

The Ten of Pentacles on Venus’s own Friday asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question: what am I building that will shelter those who come after me?

Not money only. A kind way of speaking, a habit of gathering, a tradition of hospitality. These become the inheritance that truly lasts.

Venus retrograde makes this a lovely time to revisit family stories and traditions — to remember what our elders gave us and decide what we wish to carry forward. The Moon in Cancer adds tenderness toward family and home.

And because the Moon is waning, the reflection carries a gentle direction: tend what already exists, rather than starting something new.

Thought of the Day

Home, softly built, is not a possession. She is the sovereign feminine beneath the archway, her daughters and grandchildren gathered close, the long love of the family glowing in the air around her like a tree of gold.

Affirmation

I sit, softly, as the hearth-grandmother sits — rooted in the love handed down to me, and tending a home that will shelter those who come after.

Questions to Consider
  1. Which traditions, recipes, or stories from your family do you most want to keep alive?
  2. Who are the elders, by blood or by choice, whose love built the ground you stand on?
  3. What kind of inheritance — beyond money — are you creating for the people who will come after you?
  4. Where in your life do you feel the deepest sense of belonging?
Quote of the Day
“Whither thou goest, I will go;
and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people.”
— Ruth 1:16, King James Version (1611)

The Book of Ruth — one of only two books of the Hebrew Bible named for a woman — tells the story of Naomi, a widow far from her homeland, and her Moabite daughter-in-law Ruth, also widowed. When Naomi decides to return home to Bethlehem and urges Ruth to go back to her own mother’s house, Ruth refuses to leave her. These words are her answer. The translation here comes from the King James Version, first printed in 1611.

Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people. Ruth chooses Naomi as her family, and the two women make a home together in Bethlehem. Ruth later marries Boaz, and becomes the great-grandmother of King David — so her single act of loyalty shapes generations. The verse is often read at weddings, but it was first spoken by one woman to another: a promise that home is the people we choose to belong to.

Today’s Ten of Pentacles lives in Ruth’s words directly. One woman’s loyalty to another built a household that lasted for generations. The hearth-grandmother knows that every family tree begins with someone choosing to stay.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Teach Your Children” — Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (from Déjà Vu, 1970)

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young — the folk-rock group formed by David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young — released “Teach Your Children” on their 1970 album Déjà Vu. Graham Nash, born in Blackpool, England, in 1942, wrote the song after seeing a photograph of a child holding a toy grenade, and it became one of the group’s best-loved hits. The pedal steel guitar on the recording was played by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead.

Today’s Ten of Pentacles lives in this song. It is a gentle call between the generations — parents and children teaching one another, each passing something of value to the other. It is the sound of a family, and a world, being held together by care handed down.

Parting Thought
May the Ten of Pentacles’ sacred first-hearth-grandmother sit beside you beneath the stone archway,
her shawl warm around her shoulders, her daughters and grandchildren gathered close.
May the small tender belonging be enough —
one family story remembered, one tradition honored, one gift of love passed gently down.
May the waning Moon in Cancer welcome you home to your own hearth,
and may Venus, on her own Friday, make your home a place of beauty and rest.
Whither thou goest, I will go; thy people shall be my people.
The body has, faithfully, rested in the long love of her lineage on the sacred twentieth morning — the Ten of Pentacles’ blessing on Venus’s own Friday.
