The Hierophant

MAJOR ARCANA  ·  V · THE HIEROPHANT
Sacred First-Sharing · Sacred Mars-Day · Sacred Waning-Gibbous-Taurus-Moon · Sacred First-Waning · Sacred Moon-Square-Mars · Sacred Venus-in-Libra · Sacred Seventeenth-Morning · Day 17 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-teaching-mother of tender first-sharing

A sacred first-sharing day for the passing of the keys,
as the Hierophant’s teaching-mother blesses her students on Mars’s own Tuesday, the Moon beginning her waning in Taurus, the Hierophant’s own sign.

The Energy of The Hierophant

The Hierophant carries the energy of the sacred first-teaching-mother — the keeper of wisdom who passes on what she has received. She is the fifth card of the Major Arcana, the bridge between the inner world of spirit and the outer world of shared life. Where the Empress creates and the Emperor builds, the Hierophant teaches: she gathers what generations have learned and hands it down.

The Hierophant does not, faithfully, mean rigid rules or empty ritual. At her best she is the grandmother at the kitchen table, the teacher who changed your life, the elder who knows the old songs and the old remedies. She holds tradition not as a cage, but as a gift worth keeping alive.

The Hierophant is the card of Taurus, and today the waning Moon travels through Taurus at the start of the disseminating phase — the season of sharing what the cycle has taught. Few cards could suit this moment better.

Symbolism of the Card

A woman sits between two gray stone pillars in a quiet sanctuary. She wears a soft red mantle and a simple triple crown. One hand is lifted in blessing. At her feet rest two crossed golden keys. Before her, two students kneel to receive what she has learned. A sprig of lavender lies on the step between them.

The two pillars are the balance of law and freedom, outer form and inner meaning. The triple crown honors body, mind, and spirit. The crossed keys are the keys of understanding, which can open both the worldly and the sacred. The kneeling students are the next generation. Her blessing is not for herself. It is meant to travel on.

Reflection for the Day

The Hierophant on Mars’s own Tuesday asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question: what have I been given that is meant to be passed on?

A recipe, a song, a way of being kind, a hard lesson learned. These things live only as long as someone carries them forward.

Mercury retrograde makes this an especially good time to remember and honor older wisdom — the lessons of the past, the teachers who came before. Mars on his own day gives the energy to share it actively.

And because the Moon has begun to wane, the reflection carries a gentle direction: from here, the cycle turns toward giving, teaching, and letting go.

Thought of the Day

Wisdom, softly shared, is not authority. She is the sovereign feminine between the pillars, her hand raised in blessing, passing the keys she was given to the hands that come after.

Affirmation

I sit, softly, as the teaching-mother sits — honoring the wisdom given to me, and passing it on with an open hand to all who come after.

Questions to Consider
  1. Who are the teachers, elders, or mothers whose wisdom you carry?
  2. What tradition, practice, or lesson in your life feels worth keeping alive?
  3. What do you know well enough to teach, and who might benefit from learning it?
  4. How could you honor the lineage of wisdom that shaped you this week?
Quote of the Day
“The growing good of the world
is partly dependent on unhistoric acts.”
— George Eliot, Middlemarch

George Eliot — the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, born in Warwickshire, England, in 1819; who taught herself languages and philosophy, translated German theology, and worked as an editor of the Westminster Review in London; who chose a man’s name for her fiction so that it would be taken seriously; whose novels include Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, and Middlemarch (1871–72), often called the greatest novel in English; and who died in 1880 — wrote these words in the last sentence of Middlemarch, closing the story of her heroine, Dorothea.

The growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts. The sentence continues: things are not as bad for us as they might have been, half owing to the many who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs. Eliot ends her great novel not with a triumph but with a tribute to ordinary goodness — the kindness, steadiness, and quiet teaching of people whose names no one will remember, but whose lives shaped everyone around them.

Today’s Hierophant lives in Eliot’s words directly. The teaching-mother may never appear in a history book. But every blessing she gives and every key she passes on adds, quietly and surely, to the world’s growing good.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Greatest Love of All” — Whitney Houston (from Whitney Houston, 1985)

Whitney Houston — born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1963, who grew up singing in her church choir and learned from her mother, the gospel singer Cissy Houston — recorded “Greatest Love of All” for her 1985 debut album. Written by Michael Masser and Linda Creed and first recorded by George Benson, the song became Whitney’s third consecutive number-one single in 1986.

Today’s Hierophant moves gently in this song. It speaks of teaching children well and helping each one find the strength and dignity within, so they can carry it forward. It is, at heart, a teacher’s hymn — and a reminder that the most important lessons we pass on are about love and self-respect.

Parting Thought
May the Hierophant’s sacred first-teaching-mother sit beside you between the two pillars,
her hand lifted in blessing, the golden keys at her feet, her students gathered close.
May the small tender teaching be enough —
one lesson honored, one gift passed on, one key placed gently in the hands of someone coming after.
May the waning Moon in Taurus carry your wisdom outward,
and may Mars, on his own Tuesday, give you the courage to share it.
The growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts.
The body has, faithfully, passed on the keys on the sacred seventeenth morning — the Hierophant’s blessing on Mars’s own Tuesday.

The Hermit

MAJOR ARCANA  ·  IX · THE HERMIT
The tender first small releasing · Sacred First-Releasing · Sacred Last-Quarter-Moon · Sacred Saturn-Day · Sacred Moon-At-Home-in-Cancer · Sacred Sun-Moon-Cardinal-Square · Sacred Doubled Venus-and-Sun-at-Home · Sacred Post-Harvest-Release · Day 23 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-wise-elder-feminine of tender first-releasing

A sacred first-releasing day for gentle post-homecoming-inward-turning, tender first-lantern-holding,
and the soft trust of the sacred first-releasing meeting the homecomed arc of the fresh 30-day cycle as the Moon herself completes softly her waning gibbous journey and softly arrives at the sacred Last Quarter threshold within Cancer (her own venerated domicile home) on Saturn’s own venerated day.

The Energy of The Hermit

The Hermit carries the energy of sacred first-wise-elder-feminine softly with her inward-lantern — not the achiever who must produce visible wisdom with fanfare, but the small tender sovereign feminine who already softly holds the sacred small tender lantern as the sacred first-basket-of-homecoming softly releases across her own embodied threshold. She is the sacred first-releasing after the sacred first-homecoming, and today — Sacred First-Releasing with Sacred Last-Quarter-Moon and Sacred Saturn-Day, on Saturn’s own venerated Saturday when the Moon herself reaches the sacred Last Quarter threshold within her own venerated Cancer home — she arrives at the sacred first-releasing moment of the newly-begun cycle, at the sacred threshold of the fourth full week of practice.

She is not, softly, asking you to complete the whole release. She is not asking you to prove that the homecoming has produced visible letting-go, to defend it against smallness, to make the releasing performable before allowing it. She is offering the small tender releasing itself: notice the sacred small tender lantern softly held before you, feel the sacred small tender staff softly at your side, let the releasing be, softly, a releasing.

This is not surrender.
It is releasing.
There is a difference.

May Sarton names it: Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is the richness of self.

The sacred first-releasing does not need to force the letting-go to be true.
She comes, softly, from the very willingness to let the homecomed basket set down what no longer belongs as The Hermit blesses her own venerated threshold.
She has, faithfully, always been witnessed by the six-pointed star softly glowing within the lantern.

Symbolism of the Card

Sacred first-wise-elder-feminine softly with her hood-of-inward-turning. This is sacred continuity of the mother-figure across cards — the hand-from-clouds of the aces, the alchemist of Temperance, the hope-pouring-mother of The Star, the Moon-veiled-priestess of the High Priestess, the balancing-mother of Justice, the crossing-mother of Six of Swords, the cup-mother of Ace of Cups, the two cup-mothers of Two of Cups, the fire-queen-mother of Queen of Wands, the sovereign empress-mother of The Empress, the lunar-witness of The Moon, the earth-mother-queen of Queen of Pentacles, the messenger-witness of The Magician, the relational-witness of The Lovers, yesterday’s water-mother-queen of Queen of Cups, now the sacred first-wise-elder-feminine softly with her inward-lantern at the sacred Saturday Saturn-day.

Sacred small tender lantern softly held before her. This is sacred first-inward-light — sacred first-Hermetic-star softly within (sacred first-six-pointed-star of hermetic wisdom), sacred first-Saturn-day-illumination for the sacred Last Quarter threshold.

Sacred small tender staff softly at her side. This is sacred first-Saturn-staff — sacred first-support-of-solitude, sacred first-elder-wisdom-column continuing softly from the twelve prior cards.

Sacred small tender autumn-mountain-peak softly at her feet. This is sacred first-elevation-witness — sacred first-perspective-summit softly claimed, sacred first-autumn-continuation replacing softly the traditional snow with sacred small tender autumn leaves at her feet.

Sacred small tender greyed-cream gown softly draped. This is sacred first-Saturn-day-robe — sacred first-hermit-cloak of gentle austerity, sacred first-wise-elder-textile of soft sovereign solitude.

Sacred small tender pearl-of-wisdom softly at her heart. This is sacred first-Cancer-continuity — sacred first-Moon-pearl from yesterday’s Queen of Cups softly carried forward, sacred first-luminous-witness at the heart-center of the wise-elder-feminine.

Sacred small tender autumn leaves softly falling around her. This is sacred first-autumn-leaves-continuity — sacred continuity from Days 12 through 22, sacred first-Last-Quarter-release made visible on the ground, sacred first-October-arrival deepening softly.

Sacred warm dawn-silver-lantern-light holds the whole scene softly. This is sacred first-Saturn-day-silver — sacred silver-honey for Saturn’s own venerated day, sacred first-Saturn-day-silver-lantern-light of the sacred first-releasing-morning at the sacred Last Quarter threshold.

This card is about the sacred art of releasing.

Not surrender-declaration outward.
Not proving letting-go.
Simply the small tender basket-of-homecoming softly setting down what no longer belongs at the wise-elder threshold.

Reflection for the Day

What sacred small tender releasing has been softly waiting in you, not to be surrendered?

The Hermit invites you to stop demanding your fresh cycle prove its letting-go and, softly, to just let the small releasing set down at the center of the homecomed basket.

Not, faithfully, the visible dramatic proof-of-surrender.
Not the polished release-declaration.
Just the sacred small tender basket-of-homecoming setting down softly what no longer belongs that has, faithfully, already begun to release in you.

You may notice that releasing feels like solitude.

It is.
Sacred releasing is not, faithfully, an act of striving to force the letting-go.
It is a small softening of the story that solitude must be feared to count as sovereign.

There may also be an invitation to release the belief that the releasing must impress every witness around you.

To trust that today, softly, is enough of a releasing on its own.
To let the small homecoming, softly, set down what no longer belongs rather than announce.
To honor May Sarton’s quiet insistence: not that loneliness is your inheritance, but that solitude is the richness of self — and one small tender releasing is itself the sovereign richness-blessing.

Thought of the Day

The sacred releasing does not need to force the letting-go. She only needs, softly, to let the homecomed basket set down what no longer belongs at Saturn’s own pace.

✦   ✦   ✦
Affirmation

I turn, softly, toward the sacred first-releasing-into-solitude of the homecomed basket of the fresh cycle,
and I let The Hermit hold softly her inward-lantern without needing to prove I have surrendered the whole letting-go.

Questions to Consider

What sacred small tender homecoming has been softly waiting to set down what no longer belongs in me rather than being surrendered?

Where have I confused releasing with surrender, or solitude with loneliness?

What one small act of tender lantern-holding could I offer myself today on the Sacred First-Releasing morning on Saturn’s own venerated Saturday?

What would it feel like to trust that one small tender letting-go of the homecomed basket is, faithfully, already itself the richness-blessing?

Quote of the Day

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Let It Be” — The Beatles (1970)

The Beatles’ luminous 1970 title track from the album Let It Be — sacred male vocal harmonies of the sacred contemporary release-hymn tradition, Paul McCartney’s composition invoking his own late mother Mary as the sacred first-elder-feminine of comfort — carries the exact quality of The Hermit’s sacred first-releasing on the twenty-third morning of the fresh cycle on Saturn’s own venerated Saturday: not the forcing of the whole surrender but the small tender chorus of the sacred first-letting-go softly singing when I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me… let it be, let it be. The sovereign wise-elder-feminine holds softly her inward-lantern, and the releasing gathers like silver-honey only the sovereign feminine can bless softly into.

Parting Thought

You do not have to force the whole letting-go today.
You only have to, softly, let the sacred first-releasing set down at the center of the homecomed basket of the fresh cycle.

The Hermit reminds you that the sacred first-releasing was, faithfully, always yours to allow.

Not a dramatic surrender-declaration.
Not a productive letting-go for the shelf.
Just here, softly holding the sacred small tender lantern at your own actual autumn-mountain-peak as the sacred small tender staff softly steadies beside you and the sacred small tender autumn leaves softly fall around you signaling that the sacred homecomed basket of yesterday has, faithfully, begun to release in you.

The releasing threshold within you today has been arriving, faithfully, for exactly one small deliberate act of allowing.

You are not being asked to prove the surrender.
You are being asked to let the small homecoming, softly, set down what no longer belongs under Saturn’s own venerated Saturday and let the sacred morning release with you: I release. I hold the lantern. The sacred first-releasing was, faithfully, always offered to me on Saturn’s own venerated Saturday.

Wander wisely, wild one.
