The Hanged Man

MAJOR ARCANA  ·  XII · THE HANGED MAN
Sacred First-Surrendering · Sacred Jupiter-Day · Sacred Waxing-Gibbous-Pisces-Moon · Sacred Doubled Jupiter · Sacred Sun’s-Last-Libra-Day · Sacred Water-Trine-to-Scorpio · Sacred Twelfth-Morning · Day 12 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-suspended-mother of tender first-surrendering

A sacred first-surrendering day for the holy pause,
as the Hanged Man’s suspended-mother rests calm and haloed from her living tree on Jupiter’s own Thursday, the nearly full Moon swimming in Pisces.

The Energy of The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man carries the energy of the sacred first-suspended-mother — the one who willingly hangs still, upside down, until the world looks new. She is the twelfth card of the Major Arcana, the great pause in the middle of the journey. Where other cards act, she waits. Where others push forward, she lets go and sees.

The Hanged Man does not, faithfully, mean punishment or helplessness. Look at her face: it is calm. The halo around her head is the light of new understanding. She has chosen this stillness, the way a seed chooses winter, and from it comes insight that no amount of effort could have produced.

The card is associated with water and, in many modern traditions, with Neptune and Pisces. Today the nearly full Moon swims through Pisces on Jupiter’s own Thursday. It is a day made for her kind of wisdom: surrender, perspective, and grace.

Symbolism of the Card

A woman rests upside down from a living tree, one foot gently held by the branch and the other leg bent softly behind it in the shape of a cross. Her arms are folded at ease behind her back. Her face is calm and unafraid. A soft golden halo glows around her head. Small green leaves are budding on the tree above her, and a sprig of lavender is woven into the branch.

The living tree means her suspension is not death but growth — she hangs from something alive and still budding. Her bent leg forms the number four, the sign of stability, even while she is upside down. Her hidden hands show that she has stopped trying to do anything. The halo is the gift of the pause: seeing what was invisible while she was busy.

Reflection for the Day

The Hanged Man on Jupiter’s own Thursday asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question: what might I see if I stopped struggling and simply let myself hang still for a while?

Often the answer we are searching for will not come while we are searching. It arrives when we pause, turn the problem upside down, and look at it with fresh eyes.

The Moon in Pisces trines Venus and Mercury in Scorpio, softening the heart and inviting honest reflection. Mercury’s retrograde begins on Saturday, adding to the sense that this is a time for pausing rather than pushing.

And because the Full Moon is only days away, the reflection is timely: let things ripen. The full light will show what the pause has made clear.

Thought of the Day

Stillness, softly chosen, is not defeat. She is the sovereign feminine resting upside down from the living tree, calm-faced and haloed, seeing the world anew because she stopped trying to change it.

Affirmation

I rest, softly, as the suspended-mother rests — still and unafraid, held by the living tree, trusting the pause to show me what effort never could.

Questions to Consider
  1. Where in your life have you been struggling against something that might need a pause instead?
  2. What would this situation look like from a completely different angle?
  3. What has a past period of waiting or stillness taught you?
  4. What are you ready to stop trying to control, at least for now?
Quote of the Day
“Let nothing disturb you,
let nothing frighten you;
all things are passing.
Patience obtains all things.”
— Teresa of Ávila

Teresa of Ávila — born in Ávila, Spain, in 1515; who entered a Carmelite convent at about twenty and, after years of illness and inner struggle, became one of the great mystics of Christian history; who traveled the roads of Spain founding new, simpler convents for women devoted to prayer; who wrote The Interior Castle (1577), describing the soul as a castle of many rooms with the divine at its center; and who died in 1582 — left these words in a short verse found in her prayer book after her death. In 1970 she became the first woman named a Doctor of the Church.

Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you; all things are passing. Patience obtains all things. The verse continues by saying that whoever holds to the divine lacks nothing. Teresa lived through great upheaval — illness, opposition, long and difficult journeys — and these lines are her distilled wisdom: storms pass, and steadiness comes from letting go of what cannot be held. In Spanish it begins “Nada te turbe,” and it has been sung and prayed for more than four centuries.

Today’s Hanged Man lives in Teresa’s words directly. The suspended-mother is not disturbed by her stillness. All things are passing, including this pause, and patience will bring what struggle could not.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Breathe (2 AM)” — Anna Nalick (from Wreck of the Day, 2005)

Anna Nalick — born in Glendora, California, in 1984, who began writing songs as a teenager — released “Breathe (2 AM)” on her 2005 debut album, Wreck of the Day. Written when she was still very young, the song found a wide audience for its plain-spoken comfort, and it became the album’s signature track.

Today’s Hanged Man moves gently in this song. It speaks to people at the edge of their strength, and offers the simplest counsel there is: stop, and breathe. Its quiet acceptance of hard moments, and its trust that they will pass, carries the same wisdom as the suspended-mother hanging calmly from her tree.

Parting Thought
May the Hanged Man’s sacred first-suspended-mother rest beside you from her living tree,
calm-faced and unafraid, her golden halo glowing, new leaves budding above her.
May the small tender pause be enough —
one struggle set down, one problem turned upside down, one fresh way of seeing arriving in the stillness.
May Jupiter, honored twice on his own Thursday, bless your letting go,
and may the nearly full Moon in Pisces hold you gently as you rest.
Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you; all things are passing. Patience obtains all things.
The body has, faithfully, rested in the pause on the sacred twelfth morning — the Hanged Man’s blessing on Jupiter’s own Thursday.
