Your cards have been chosen
Their teachings thread through the affirmation, gratitude, and practice that follow — and you are invited to tap each card to reveal its full letter when you arrive below.
Today, softly, the body offers the tender first small resolving — standing at the half-lit crossroads of the cycle, listening inward, and choosing one way forward with a quiet, honest yes.
The sacred eighth morning brings the newly-begun cycle to its first turning point. The Moon reaches First Quarter today: exactly half-lit, standing at a right angle to the Sun. Astrologers have long called this the crisis of action — the moment when the seed planted at the New Moon meets its first real resistance and asks to be chosen, or let go.
Resolving is not, faithfully, forcing a decision before you are ready. She is the honest pause before the yes — the swords crossed over the heart while the body listens, and then the gentle lowering of one sword as the way becomes clear. It is Sunday, the Sun’s own day, and the Moon in Capricorn squares the Sun in Libra. The affirmation names the practice: listen, then choose.
Today, I give thanks for every choice I have made that brought me here — the brave ones, the uncertain ones, even the ones I would make differently now — because each one taught me how to choose.
A life is shaped by thousands of decisions, most of them small and quickly forgotten. Some were made with courage, some in confusion, some by simply not deciding at all. Today’s gratitude is for all of them, and for the self who kept choosing.
The chronic cultural pull is to fear the wrong choice so much that we avoid choosing, or to judge our past selves harshly for decisions made with less knowledge than we have now. Today’s gratitude honors the older wisdom: every choice is a teacher, and the ability to decide grows with practice.
Today’s Two of Swords carries this exactly — the sacred first-deciding-mother seated on a stone bench by the evening sea, a soft white blindfold over her eyes, two long swords crossed over her heart and balanced perfectly in her hands, a half-lit moon hanging above her in the darkening sky, small rocks rising from the still water behind her, a sprig of lavender resting at the foot of the bench. She is not paralyzed. She is listening before she moves.
The rare embodied capacity for tender feminine deciding — the body who can, softly, quiet the outer noise, listen for her own inner yes, and trust it enough to act.
The First Quarter Moon in Capricorn on the Sun’s own Sunday brings a particular invitation to the body: notice where you are holding two options so tightly that neither can move. Crossed arms, a held breath, a tight jaw — these are often the body’s way of postponing a choice.
The Moon in Capricorn, Saturn’s sign, asks for commitment; the Sun in Libra, Venus’s sign, asks for balance. Their square today is a gentle friction between weighing and deciding. Both are good. The art is knowing when the weighing is done. Venus remains retrograde in Scorpio, so choices of the heart may still want time.
The newly-begun cycle carries, faithfully, its words so far: kindling → meeting → claiming → seeking → hoping → grounding → steadying → resolving. The first week laid the ground; the First Quarter asks what will be built on it.
Today asks the body one small practice: allow one small resolving. One small choice made. One small option released. One small yes said without needing to be certain of everything.
A card chooses you
A card from the deck
Today the Moon reaches her First Quarter in Capricorn — half in light, half in shadow — standing square to the Sun in Libra on the Sun’s own Sunday. It is the first turning point of the newly-begun cycle: the moment when intention meets resistance and asks to be chosen.

First Quarter Moon in Capricorn on Sun-dayand the sacred geometry of the body’s tender first small resolving
The Moon reaches First Quarter today in the later degrees of Capricorn, about 90° ahead of the Sun at Libra 25°. Exactly half of her face is lit. She will leave Capricorn for Aquarius by tomorrow. Look for her high in the southern sky at sunset, the line between light and shadow running straight down her middle.
First Quarter is a square: two forces at right angles, each pressing on the other. Here it is Capricorn’s steady ambition against Libra’s wish for harmony — the question of whether to commit or to keep weighing. Saturn, Capricorn’s ruler, remains in Aries. Venus, Libra’s ruler, is still retrograde in Scorpio, and Mercury slows there too, so not every decision needs to be final today. But one small one could be.
Somatically: square days can feel like tension between two pulls — a restlessness, a held breath, a feeling of standing at a fork. The small tightness in the chest when two options both feel possible, the small release in the shoulders when one is finally chosen, the small steadiness that follows a decision honestly made. Notice the release more than the tension.
The sacred art the body practices today: not rushing, not freezing, just honest resolving. The Two of Swords teaches this exactly — the sacred first-deciding-mother seated on a stone bench by the evening sea, a soft white blindfold over her eyes, two long swords crossed over her heart and balanced perfectly in her hands, a half-lit moon hanging above her in the darkening sky, small rocks rising from the still water behind her, a sprig of lavender resting at the foot of the bench. Her stillness is not avoidance. It is the deep listening that comes before a true choice.

Character — the willingness to accept responsibility
for one’s own life — is the source
from which self-respect springs.
— Joan Didion, “On Self-Respect”
Joan Didion — born in Sacramento, California, in 1934, a fifth-generation Californian; who won an essay contest sponsored by Vogue as a college senior and went to work at the magazine in New York; who became one of the defining essayists of her time with Slouching Towards Bethlehem (1968) and The White Album (1979); whose memoir of grief, The Year of Magical Thinking (2005), won the National Book Award; and who died in 2021 at eighty-seven — wrote these words in “On Self-Respect,” an essay first published in Vogue in 1961 and later collected in Slouching Towards Bethlehem.
Character — the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life — is the source from which self-respect springs. Didion wrote the essay during a hard stretch of her own young life, working out what self-respect really was. Her answer was clear-eyed: it does not come from being admired or from avoiding mistakes. It comes from owning your choices — making them, living with them, and choosing again.
Today’s Sacred First-Resolving lives in Didion’s words directly. The deciding-mother of the Two of Swords will soon lower one sword and walk forward. Whatever she chooses, the choice will be hers — and that ownership, more than the choice itself, is where her self-respect grows.
What choice have you been holding crossed over your heart, unable to lower either sword — and if you listened very quietly this morning, which way is your body already leaning?
Sometimes the tender first small resolving does not open easily. A choice can feel so weighted that even naming it brings tension, or both options can seem equally good — or equally hard. The body’s soft first-resolving may feel like a risk of loss.
Three softer entry-points into today’s question, each honoring the body’s own faithful pace:
- Two-swords door: name the two options on either side of your choice. Write one sentence about what each would give you, and one about what each would cost.
- Body door: imagine choosing the first option and notice your body for a breath. Then imagine the second. Write which one let your shoulders drop.
- Small-choice door: if the big decision is not ready, write one smaller choice you could make today that would move you a step closer to clarity.
The tender first small resolving of the sacred first-deciding-mother — five small acts of soft feminine choosing, honored as the whole holy work of this sacred eighth morning of the newly-begun cycle, at the First Quarter Moon, on the Sun’s own venerated Sunday.
Today’s medicine begins with the arms. Crossing them softly over the heart echoes the card and lets the body feel what holding two options actually feels like — the slight effort, the balance, the waiting.
Naming the two sides turns a vague, heavy uncertainty into something you can actually see. The blindfold on the card is not ignorance; it is a turning inward so the outer noise does not decide for you.
The body often knows before the mind admits it. At the First Quarter, when the Moon stands square to the Sun, the body’s quiet signals are especially worth listening to.
Lowering one sword is the moment of resolution. It does not have to be forever. Didion’s teaching lives here: self-respect grows from owning a choice, not from making a perfect one.
The closing whisper seals the practice. Nothing further is required today — the small first-resolving allowed here is, faithfully, the whole practice, complete on its own tender terms, blessed by the Two of Swords’ deciding-mother on the eighth morning, as the First Quarter Moon stands half-lit in Capricorn.
