Today's Affirmation

Today, softly, the body offers the tender first small remembering — the small tender return to what has warmed the heart in the newly-begun cycle, the small tender first honoring of memory as sovereign practice rather than nostalgic escape, held with love as the Waning Crescent Moon rests softly at her second day at Leo (the Sun’s own fire-home) on the Moon’s own venerated Monday.

The reasoning

The sacred twenty-fifth morning of the newly-begun cycle carries a beautifully doubled lunar-and-solar current: Moon-day (Monday, the day of soft feminine reflection) meeting Six of Cups (Sacred First-Small-Cup-Bearer, the tender exchange of remembered kindness) meeting the Waning Crescent Moon at her second day at Leo (the Sun’s own fire-home). The tender feminine visits the sovereign solar throne even as she wanes toward the dark days.

Remembering is not, faithfully, nostalgia. She is the sacred art of the sovereign feminine who softly returns to what has warmed her in the arc now completing — not the escape into the golden past, not the refusal of the present, just the small tender first honoring of what the newly-begun cycle has, faithfully, already given. The affirmation names the practice: the small tender first return-with-love to what has, faithfully, mattered.

Gratitude

Today, I give thanks for the body who offers the tender first small remembering gently — the small honest return to what has warmed the heart in the arc, without demand that the remembering perform an elaborate ceremony of grief or gratitude.

The sacred first-remembering gratitude

The body who has, faithfully, harvested, integrated, settled, nourished, whispered, communed, come home, released, and warmed these last mornings now stands, softly, at the sacred first-remembering threshold as the fourth week of the newly-begun cycle continues to wane. Today the Waning Crescent Moon rests softly at her second day at Leo (the Sun’s own fire-home) on the Moon’s own venerated Monday — the tender feminine visits the sovereign solar throne.

The body who can offer the soft tender remembering of what has, faithfully, warmed her in the arc is, faithfully, one of the most easily-lost sovereign capacities any modern human being ever allows. The chronic cultural pull is toward perpetual forward-orientation — the next task, the next arc, the next reach, the next unclaimed newness. Today’s gratitude is for the smaller remembering the sovereign feminine has always known: the first tender return to what has warmed her, honored not as retreat but as the arc’s own harvest gathered.

Today’s Six of Cups carries this exactly — the sacred first-small-cup-bearer, small tender child softly offering a small tender chalice of small tender flowers to another small tender child in the small tender courtyard garden, small tender goldenrod and small tender white lilies blooming softly in the cup, small tender medieval walls warming softly in the small tender autumn light behind them — the sovereign feminine of the first-remembering, small tender kindness returned across small tender time.

Healing Practice

The rare embodied capacity for tender feminine remembering — the body who can, softly, return to what has warmed her in the arc without demand that the remembering perform grief-work, gratitude-work, or an elaborate ceremony of meaning-making.

The Sacred First-Remembering Practice

Waning Crescent Moon Leo Day 2 on the Moon’s own venerated Monday, with the Moon visiting the Sun’s own fire-home, brings a particular invitation to the body: practice the rare embodied capacity of tender feminine remembering — the body who can, softly, allow her own honest return with love rather than force the memory into either grief or productivity.

A sacred sovereign feminine softly turns toward the sacred first-remembering as she is honored by the Moon’s own venerated Monday, at the Sun’s Leo throne where the Moon wanes softly as guest, on the day the Six of Cups (Sacred First-Small-Cup-Bearer) holds the card. And the body who can, today, allow the soft tender remembering becomes the body for whom what has warmed her, faithfully, comes home to her at her own faithful pace.

The newly-begun cycle carries, faithfully, its own emerging arc: welcoming (Day 1) → anchoring → brightening → deepening → stirring → telling → blessing → choosing → rooting → filling → widening → balancing → threading → softening → flowering → harvesting → integrating → settling → nourishing → whispering → communing → homecoming → releasing → warming → remembering → and the deepening waning days that will unfold. The fourth week of the newly-begun cycle continues its softening arc.

Today asks the body one small practice: allow one small remembering. One small return to a warm moment from these last twenty-four mornings. One small honoring of a small kindness received. One small quiet re-reading of a passage that has warmed you. One small remembered flavor, sound, face, or light. The small remembering that no elaborate meaning-making ceremony can outrun.

Today the Waning Crescent Moon rests softly at her second day at Leo (the Sun’s own fire-home) as the Sun rests softly at her thirteenth full day at Venus’s Libra on the Moon’s own venerated Monday — the tender feminine visits the sovereign solar throne even as she wanes, held gently by Doubled Venus-and-Sun-at-Home in the same relational air.

The Somatic Forecast

Waning Crescent Leo Day 2 on Moon-dayand the sacred geometry of the body’s tender first small remembering

The Waning Crescent Moon (~30-38% illumination, waning toward the dark days) rests softly at her second day at Leo (the Sun’s own fixed fire-home). The Sun continues at Libra Day 13 (Venus’s cardinal air-home). Monday is the Moon’s own venerated day — the sky’s tender feminine current runs strong even as she wanes. The Moon visits the Sun’s throne as honored guest.

Somatically: this is the tender feminine’s visit to what has, faithfully, warmed her, held with the softness of the waning phase. The body may notice the sacred first-remembering softly arriving as gentle memory-currents — an old song surfacing, a childhood scent returning, a warm face remembered from the arc’s early days. The small warmth in the heart when a beloved memory returns, the small softening of the eyes when the arc’s given moments come softly forward, the small quiet knowing that what has warmed you is, faithfully, still yours to remember.

The Moon (Monday’s ruler) softly presides over the day of feminine reflection. Her visit to Leo’s throne is not, faithfully, appropriation of solar fire; she comes as honored guest, softening the throne’s heat into ember-warmth suitable for the waning arc. Sacred Doubled Venus-and-Sun-at-Home continues (Sun at Libra + Venus at Libra), softening the whole configuration with relational warmth.

The sacred art the body practices today: not grief-remembering, not productive-inventory, just remembering. The Six of Cups teaches this exactly — the sacred first-small-cup-bearer, small tender child softly offering the chalice of small flowers to another small child in the courtyard garden — the sovereign feminine of the small tender kindness returned across small tender time, honored simply for its own honest warmth.

Today's Quote

We look at the world once, in childhood.
The rest is memory.

— Louise Glück, Meadowlands

The context

Louise Glück — the American poet born in New York City in 1943, U.S. Poet Laureate 2003–2004, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2020 and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1993 for The Wild Iris — published Meadowlands in 1996 (Ecco Press), her seventh collection. She died in 2023 after a lifetime of unsparing meditation on the interior life, having taught for many years at Yale, Williams, and Boston University.

Meadowlands uses the scaffolding of the Odyssey — Penelope, Odysseus, Telemachus, Circe — to write the slow disintegration of a modern marriage. The poem Nostos, from which today’s line is drawn, takes its title from the Greek word for homecoming (the same root that gives us nostalgia) and meditates on how memory works in a life: the astonishment that the whole of an existence can rest upon a few early perceptions, endlessly returned to, endlessly re-seen.

We look at the world once, in childhood. The rest is memory. This is exactly what today’s Sacred First-Remembering asks the body to allow. The Six of Cups does not, faithfully, offer the small chalice of flowers as a lament for what is gone; the small tender child offers it as the sovereign practice of what has been given being softly given again. Louise Glück’s line is the sovereign feminine’s permission to notice that memory is not a departure from the present but a soft honoring of the arc’s given moments.

For Your Journal

What one small tender first-remembering is the body quietly asking to allow today — not the whole autobiography, not the elaborate nostalgic story, but one small honest returning to a moment from these last twenty-four mornings that has, faithfully, warmed her?

A depth ladder

Sometimes the tender first small remembering does not open easily. Many of us have been trained, by long cultural inheritance, to associate looking-back with unproductive lingering — as if the honest small return to what has warmed us somehow betrays the forward march. The body’s soft first-remembering can feel indulgent at first — as if allowing one small warm memory-return requires some elaborate justification.

Three softer entry-points into today’s question, each honoring the body’s own faithful pace:

  1. Warm-moment door: what one small warm moment from the last twenty-four mornings of this cycle has, faithfully, stayed with you — a light, a face, a small kindness, a passage read, a small tender exchange? Write from the warmth, not from the summary.
  2. Received-kindness door: what one small kindness has, faithfully, been offered to you in this arc that you have not yet allowed yourself to fully receive? Write the kindness as the small tender child would offer it in the chalice — without complicating it.
  3. Warmth-thread door: what one small element of your own long life has, faithfully, warmed you across many arcs — a beloved practice, a returning song, a family recipe, a childhood window — that would like to be softly acknowledged today? Write the thread, not the argument for it.
A Sacred Practice for Today

The tender first small remembering of the sacred first-small-cup-bearer — five small acts of soft feminine first-return honored as the whole holy work of this sacred twenty-fifth morning on the Moon’s own venerated Monday.

I
Find a soft place where the body settles briefly with a hand near the heart. A chair. A cushion. A doorway. The body who remembers does not need a formal posture — she needs the small permission to notice that memory lives, faithfully, in the whole body, not only in the head, on the Moon’s own venerated day.

Today’s medicine begins with the simple physical act of noticing where memory lives in the whole body on the Moon’s own venerated day. The Six of Cups does not, faithfully, demand a dramatic outward performance. The small children in the garden simply exchange the small chalice softly — and the body who can take this small embodied pause becomes the body for whom the rest of the practice naturally unfolds.

II
Notice one small warm moment from the last twenty-four mornings of this newly-begun cycle. A light through a window. A small kindness offered. A meal shared. A face at the door. Do not evaluate. Just softly, faithfully, notice that the warmth is, indeed, still here in your body. The simple noticing is, faithfully, enough.

The Moon on her own venerated day teaches the sacred art of soft feminine reflection. The noticing of one warm moment is the sovereign feminine’s honest first step. Louise Glück’s line points here: we look at the world once, in childhood. The rest is memory. The moment has, faithfully, already been given; the remembering honors its given warmth.

III
Softly re-inhabit it for one small honest minute. Let the light through the window come again. Let the small kindness be received again. Let the face at the door be seen again. Let the arc’s warmth be, faithfully, gently re-warming.

The Moon’s visit to Leo’s throne is enacted in the body by this small re-inhabiting. The Six of Cups’ small children exchanging the chalice is the sovereign posture of the remembering: the warmth crossing softly between the past-self and the present-self. What you allow to be re-warmed today, the sky is, faithfully, allowing above.

IV
Offer one small thanks to whoever or whatever gave it — the light, the kindness, the meal, the face. Do not send an elaborate message. Just, softly, in your own body, allow the thanks to be, faithfully, given.

The small child’s offered chalice of flowers is, faithfully, already thanks. Louise Glück’s Meadowlands is a long tender attention to how what has been given goes on being given through the honoring memory does. The small giving of one small honest thanks is the sovereign practice.

V
Close with the small inward whisper: I remember. I return softly to what has, faithfully, warmed me. The sacred first-remembering was, faithfully, always mine to allow on the Moon’s own venerated Monday at the Sun’s own Leo throne.

The closing whisper seals the practice. The body who names her own remembering becomes the body who inhabits it. Nothing further is required today — the small first-return allowed here is, faithfully, the whole sacred first-remembering, complete on its own tender terms, blessed by the Six of Cups in the small tender garden of returning kindness.

✦   ✦   ✦
May the tender first small remembering be offered, softly, through your own actual lived form,
and may you allow the small first-return to what has warmed you her own faithful pace of quietly honoring the arc’s given moments.
May the small tender remembering be enough —
the small warm light through the window softly re-seen, the small kindness softly received once more, the small early-cycle exchange softly re-inhabited, the small remembered flavor or sound or face that no elaborate meaning-making ceremony can outrun.
May the Six of Cups’ sacred first-small-cup-bearer soften with you —
the small tender child softly offering the small tender chalice of small tender flowers to another small tender child in the small tender courtyard garden, small tender goldenrod and small tender white lilies blooming softly in the cup, small tender medieval walls warming softly in the small tender autumn light behind them, on the Moon’s own venerated Monday at the Sun’s own Leo throne.
We look at the world once, in childhood. The rest is memory.
The body has, faithfully, offered the tender first small remembering softly on the sacred twenty-fifth morning of the newly-begun cycle — the Sacred First-Remembering with the Waning Crescent Moon at Leo (the Sun’s own fire-home) on the Moon’s own venerated Monday.
