Queen of Cups

MINOR ARCANA  ·  COURT CARD · QUEEN OF CUPS
Sacred First-Meeting · Sacred Moon-Day · Sacred Waxing-Crescent-Scorpio-Moon · Sacred Moon-Meets-Venus · Sacred Moon-and-Mercury-in-Scorpio · Sacred Venus-in-the-Underworld · Sacred Second-Morning · Day 2 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-gazing-mother of tender first-meeting

A sacred first-meeting day for the heart at home in deep water,
as the Queen of Cups’ gazing-mother sits at the edge of her sea on the Moon’s own Monday, her closed golden cup held with love.

The Energy of the Queen of Cups

The Queen of Cups carries the energy of the sacred first-gazing-mother — the woman who is at home in deep feeling. She is the water of water: queen of the suit of cups, which belongs to water and the heart. Where others are swept away by emotion or keep it at arm’s length, she sits at the very edge of the sea and looks into it with steady, loving attention.

The Queen of Cups is not, faithfully, fragile or overly sentimental. Her gift is emotional intelligence — the ability to feel fully and still see clearly. She is the counselor, the healer, the friend people call at two in the morning, because she can hold what others cannot.

Today’s sky gives her a perfect throne. The Moon is in Scorpio, a water sign, on her own Monday, and she meets Venus there. The queen of feeling arrives on the day the Moon and the goddess of love sit together in deep water.

Symbolism of the Card

A queen sits on a throne at the edge of the sea, its stone carved with small water-spirits and a shell. In both hands she holds a golden chalice, ornate and closed, and she gazes into it with soft attention. Small smooth pebbles rest at her feet where the tide comes in. A sprig of lavender lies in the fold of her robe.

Her chalice is the only closed cup in the suit — a sign that her inner life is protected, her feelings sacred and private. The sea is the vast unconscious she lives beside without fear. The shell and water-spirits are her kin. She does not drink from the cup or pour it out. She looks into it, which is the deepest form of respect.

Reflection for the Day

The Queen of Cups on the Moon’s own Monday asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question: can I look at what I feel without needing to change it?

Not analyze it. Not fix it. Not share it with anyone yet. Just look — with the same patient love the queen gives her closed cup.

The Moon meeting Venus in Scorpio gives the reflection its depth. What surfaces today may be an old tenderness, an unspoken longing, or a grief that was never fully felt. All of it is welcome at the queen’s shore.

And because this is the second morning of a new cycle, the reflection is a foundation: every feeling you meet with compassion now becomes ground you can stand on for the thirty mornings ahead.

Thought of the Day

Feeling, softly held, is not weakness. She is the sovereign feminine at the edge of her own sea, gazing into her closed golden cup, unafraid of the depths because she has learned to love them.

Affirmation

I sit, softly, as the Queen of Cups sits — at the edge of my own deep feeling, gazing into it with love, trusting my heart to tell me what is true.

Questions to Consider
  1. What feeling have you been holding at arm’s length that might be ready to be looked at gently?
  2. Who in your life has been a Queen of Cups to you — someone who could hold your feelings without flinching?
  3. What would it mean to keep your cup closed — to honor a feeling privately rather than explaining it to anyone?
  4. Where could you offer the queen’s steady compassion to someone else this week?
Quote of the Day
“For women, then, poetry is not a luxury.
It is a vital necessity of our existence.”
— Audre Lorde, “Poetry Is Not a Luxury”

Audre Lorde — born in New York City in 1934 to parents who had come from Grenada and Barbados; who described herself as a Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet; who worked as a librarian before her poetry found its readers; who taught at colleges across New York; who wrote openly about her own illness in The Cancer Journals; and who died in 1992 at fifty-eight — wrote these words in her 1977 essay “Poetry Is Not a Luxury,” later gathered into her landmark collection Sister Outsider (1984).

For women, then, poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence. By poetry Lorde did not mean only verse on a page. She meant the way we give language to what we feel before we can fully think it — the dark, ancient, deep places in each of us where real knowing begins. To name a feeling truly, she believed, is the first step toward acting on it. The essay remains one of the most quoted pieces of feminist writing because it treats feeling not as weakness, but as a source of power.

Today’s Queen of Cups lives in Lorde’s words directly. The queen gazing into her chalice is doing the work Lorde called poetry: looking deeply enough into feeling to find its truth, and treating that truth as essential rather than indulgent.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“By Your Side” — Sade (from Lovers Rock, 2000)

Sade Adu — born in Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1959, raised in England from early childhood, and the voice of the band that carries her name — released “By Your Side” in 2000 as the first single from Lovers Rock, the band’s first album in eight years. It became one of their most beloved songs, a simple promise of steadfast care delivered in her unhurried, velvet voice.

Today’s Queen of Cups moves gently in this song. It is the voice of someone who will stay through the cold and the dark, offering comfort without conditions — exactly the love the queen gives to everyone who comes to her shore. On the Moon’s own Monday, let it remind you that you can offer that same steadiness to yourself.

Parting Thought
May the Queen of Cups’ sacred first-gazing-mother sit beside you at the edge of your own sea,
her closed golden chalice held in both hands, her gaze soft and unafraid.
May the small tender feeling be enough —
one truth looked at with love, one cup honored without needing to be poured out or explained.
May the tide come in gently at your feet,
bringing what is ready to be seen, and carrying away what is ready to go.
For women, then, poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence.
The body has, faithfully, gazed into the cup of the tender first small meeting on the sacred second morning — the Queen of Cups’ blessing on the Moon’s own Monday.
