Today the Moon and the Sun meet at Libra 17°, exact at 10:50 in the morning Central time. The Moon disappears into the Sun’s light, and the sky begins again. This oracle is the voice of the dark moon itself — not the completion behind you, but the seed ahead of you, too new to have a shape.

It is the only New Moon of the year in Libra, the sign of relationship, beauty, and balance. Venus rules it, and Venus is retrograde in Scorpio, which gives this new beginning a particular texture: it wants to be planted, then tended slowly, then revisited. Jupiter in Leo adds a warm sextile; the soil is fertile.

The sacred first-turning current is the tenderness of beginning without certainty. You do not need to know what the seed will become. You need only to let it touch the soil.

In the body, the dark moon often arrives as quiet: lower energy, a pull inward, a sense of blankness where plans usually live. This is not emptiness. It is the fallow field on the day of sowing.

Some bodies feel a small restless flicker instead — the new thing wanting to begin before it is ready. That flicker is welcome too. Let it be a spark you notice, not a fire you have to tend today.

A simple sign that the turning has happened: a breath that feels, for no clear reason, a little lighter than yesterday’s.

The sacred first-turning asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question today: what small, shapeless seed is asking to be planted in me — and can I plant it without demanding to know what it will grow into?

The New Moon is the most honest beginning there is. Nothing is visible. Everything is possible. The only work is the willingness.

Octavia Butler wrote her deepest teachings about change for exactly this moment — the point where a person stops resisting what is shifting and begins, gently, to shape it.

A seed is not a plan. She is a small yes spoken into the dark soil, trusting the dark to know what to do with it.

Today, softly, I plant one small seed in the dark of the New Moon — and I let it be shapeless, trusting that what I touch changes me as surely as I change it.

Octavia E. Butler — the American novelist born in Pasadena, California, in 1947; who wrote through years of low-paying jobs, rising at two in the morning to work on her stories; who became the first science-fiction writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship, in 1995; and who died in 2006 at fifty-eight — wrote these lines as the opening verse of Earthseed, the belief system her young heroine Lauren Olamina creates in Parable of the Sower (1993).

All that you touch You Change. All that you Change Changes you. In Butler’s novel, Earthseed’s central teaching is that God is Change — not a force to fear, but a living process one can learn to shape with care. The verse has since become a touchstone for activists, gardeners, and anyone learning to meet uncertainty with agency rather than dread.

Today’s oracle lives in Butler’s lines directly. The New Moon is change at its quietest. Whatever seed you plant today will change you as you tend it — and that mutual shaping is the whole sacred work of the cycle ahead.

“Shake It Out” — Florence + the Machine (from Ceremonials, 2011)

Florence Welch — born in London in 1986, the voice and heart of Florence + the Machine — released “Shake It Out” in the autumn of 2011 as the first single from the band’s second album, Ceremonials. Built on church organ and a swelling choir of her own voice, it became one of the band’s signature songs, an anthem of letting the past fall away so something new can begin.

The oracle hears the New Moon in this song. It is the sound of a body shaking loose what it no longer needs to carry into the next cycle, and turning, with some relief and some courage, toward the light that is not yet visible. On the dark moon it is a ceremony all its own: shake out the old, and step lighter into the new.
