The tender first small winnowing · Sacred First-Winnowing · Sacred Waning-Crescent-Virgo-Moon · Sacred Mercury-Day · Sacred Moon-Visiting-Mercury-Home · Sacred Doubled Venus-and-Sun-at-Home · Sacred Fourth-Week-Continuing · Day 27 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-small-craftswoman of tender first-winnowing

A sacred first-winnowing day for gentle post-releasing-hearth-tending, tender first-lion-taming-with-love,
and the soft trust of the sacred first-winnowing meeting the released arc of the fresh 30-day cycle as the Moon herself completes Cancer’s tender sacred water and softly ingresses into Leo’s tender sacred fire (Sun’s own venerated domicile home) on Sun’s own venerated day.

The Energy of the Eight of Pentacles

The Eight of Pentacles carries the energy of sacred first-small-craftswoman softly seated at her small tender workbench, softly engraving one small tender pentacle at a time with her small tender chisel — not the outcome-anxious achiever who must show a whole gallery of finished work, but the small tender sovereign feminine who already softly knows that essence is made by the patient repeated attention to one small piece at a time. She is the sacred first-winnowing after the sacred first-winnowing, and today — Sacred First-Winnowing with Sacred Waning-Crescent-Virgo-Moon and Sacred Mercury-Day at Mercury’s own Virgo home, on Mercury’s own doubly-venerated Wednesday — she brings the sky’s rare doubled-Mercury current directly into the craftswoman’s workshop.

The Eight of Pentacles does not, faithfully, glorify the finished portfolio. She is not the card of accumulated success or completed masterworks. She is the card of the craftswoman-in-motion — the small tender apprentice-sovereign whose whole practice is the small tender chisel meeting the small tender pentacle again and again, the honest repeated attention that softly separates what is essence from what is not, the sacred first-winnowing at the workbench.

Today’s Mercury-doubled current running through the Virgo Moon-throne makes the card uniquely resonant — the messenger-god’s discernment honored doubly (his day, his sign) while the sacred Doubled Venus-and-Sun-at-Home relational current continues softening the whole configuration.

Symbolism of the Card

A small tender craftswoman sits softly at her small tender wooden workbench in the small tender open air, softly engraving one small tender pentacle with her small tender chisel. On the small tender wooden post beside her, six small tender completed pentacles hang softly in a small tender vertical stack. One small tender pentacle rests softly on the small tender ground at her small tender feet, freshly finished, awaiting hanging. She wears a small tender leather apron over her small tender simple tunic. In the small tender distance, a small tender village glows softly at the small tender horizon, a small tender path winding softly through the small tender fields toward it.

The small tender repeated engraving is the card’s sacred first-key: eight pentacles, each identical, each requiring the same honest attention, each the small tender fruit of the same patient practice. The pentacles are, faithfully, alike — no dramatic novelty, no gallery-worthy variation — and this sameness is the card’s teaching. Mastery is not variety; it is the sovereign willingness to give the same honest attention to the same honest work again and again. The small tender path winding softly toward the small tender village reminds the sovereign feminine that the craftswoman’s workshop is not, faithfully, isolated from community; the essence made here will, faithfully, be carried into the village that waits softly at the horizon.

Reflection for the Day

The Eight of Pentacles on Mercury’s own doubly-venerated Wednesday at Mercury’s own Virgo home asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question: what one small piece of my current practice is asking for the small tender chisel of honest repeated attention, and can I, softly, allow the winnowing that comes with that attention?

Not the dramatic new project. Not the gallery-worthy variation. Not the achievement that can already be shown. Just one small honest return to the small tender workbench, one more small tender pentacle engraved with the same honest care as the six already hung above.

The Waning Crescent softens the whole reflection — there is no urgency, no productive frame, no requirement that the winnowing produce an immediate visible advance. The small tender winnowing that happens naturally at the workbench, when honest attention is given to one small piece at a time, is, faithfully, the whole practice.

Because Mercury presides doubly today, the winnowing carries a small tender scribe-current — the messenger-god’s wisdom that the honest sorting of what is essence from what is not requires only sustained attention, not harshness. The craftswoman’s chisel is, faithfully, the sovereign feminine’s tool of winnowing.

Thought of the Day

Winnowing, softly practiced, is not judgment. She is the sovereign feminine’s honest sorting of what is essence from what is not, made possible only by the patient repeated attention that the craftswoman gives to her small tender work.

Affirmation

Today, softly, I return to my own small tender workbench with my own small tender chisel — and the small tender pentacle I engrave today, engraved with honest repeated attention, is, faithfully, the whole sacred first-winnowing.

Questions to Consider
  1. What one small piece of your current practice — professional, creative, relational, spiritual — is the workbench asking you to return to today, not with dramatic novelty, but with the same honest chisel-work as before?
  2. What already-completed pentacle from your recent past has, faithfully, been engraved fully and can now be softly hung on the wooden post, no longer needing your active attention?
  3. What piece of accumulated impression, opinion, or received information can be softly winnowed today — not through harsh discarding, but through honest attention that reveals it has already, faithfully, done its service?
  4. Where does the small tender craftswoman live in your body today — what part of you knows, quiet and steady, that essence is made by the patient repeated attention to one small piece at a time?
Quote of the Day
“Instructions for living a life:
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.”
— Mary Oliver, Red Bird

Mary Oliver — the American poet born in Maple Heights, Ohio, in 1935, who spent most of her adult life in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and later in Hobe Sound, Florida; who won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984 for American Primitive and the National Book Award in 1992 for New and Selected Poems; who published more than twenty collections over a half-century of writing and became, quietly, one of the most beloved poets of her generation — wrote the poem “Sometimes” for her collection Red Bird, published by Beacon Press in 2008. She died in Hobe Sound in January 2019 at eighty-three.

Oliver spent decades walking the woods and marshes alone with a notebook, and her whole spiritual practice was, faithfully, attention itself. Instructions for living a life: pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it. These three small lines are her most-quoted words — cited by teachers, therapists, contemplative writers, grief-workers, and any sovereign woman who has ever felt the modern culture’s pull toward frantic accumulation and known there was, faithfully, another way to live.

Today’s Sacred First-Winnowing lives in Oliver’s three-line teaching directly. The sovereign feminine at her small tender workbench with her small tender chisel is, faithfully, paying attention. The astonishment is the sudden knowing of what is essence, revealed by the sustained looking. The telling about it is the small tender record kept only of what will, faithfully, be carried forward through the coming dark days into the next cycle.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Fields of Gold” — Sting (from Ten Summoner’s Tales, 1993)

Sting — born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner in Wallsend, North East England, in 1951 — wrote “Fields of Gold” after moving to Lake House in Wiltshire in 1991, where the surrounding barley fields ran gold in late summer. He released it on his fourth solo album Ten Summoner’s Tales in March 1993, and it became one of his most enduring songs — later covered by Eva Cassidy in 1996, and again after her death in 1998 introduced the song to a wider audience who heard in it the deeper harvest-teaching beneath. Sting has said in interviews that the song is a promise: I will remember these barley fields and the woman walking through them long after everything else is gone.

Today’s Sacred First-Winnowing, held by Mercury’s doubly-venerated Wednesday and Virgo’s harvest-throne, moves gently in “Fields of Gold”’s current: the sovereign feminine’s honest remembering of what is essence — the golden barley walked through in one sovereign season — as the field itself softly ripens toward the harvest of what will, faithfully, be winnowed and stored. The song is Virgo’s teaching in its most tender form: the essence remembered is, faithfully, what remains.

Parting Thought
May the tender first small winnowing be offered, softly, through your own actual lived form,
and may you allow the small first-sorting of essence-from-chaff her own faithful pace of quietly discerning what will be carried forward into the coming dark days.
May the small tender winnowing be enough —
the small piece of already-served impression softly thanked and released, the small piece of no-longer-true story softly honored and set down, the small tender air of your own discernment softly carrying the chaff away while the heavy grain of true essence falls softly back into your hands.
May the Eight of Pentacles’ sacred first-small-craftswoman soften with you —
the small tender apprentice-sovereign softly seated at her small tender workbench with her small tender chisel, softly engraving one small tender pentacle at a time, the small tender completed pentacles hung softly above her on the small tender wooden post, the small tender village glowing softly in the small tender distance, the small tender path winding softly through the small tender fields, on Mercury’s own doubly-venerated Wednesday at Mercury’s own Virgo home.
Instructions for living a life: pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.
The body has, faithfully, offered the tender first small winnowing softly on the sacred twenty-seventh morning of the newly-begun cycle — the Sacred First-Winnowing with the Waning Crescent Moon at Virgo (Mercury’s own earth-home) on Mercury’s own doubly-venerated Wednesday.
